Mackinaw Island

In another post I wrote earlier I was talking about leaving my job.  I have done that and I feel a little sadness, but at the same time a sense of relieve as well.  I feel like I have my freedom back and more time on my hands.  I am going to use every opportunity that becomes available to travel.  In fact I am leaving this week to travel to Mackinaw Island, MI.

I haven’t been there since 1989.  Our high school trip as seniors was to Mackinaw Island.  The funny thing about it is I don’t remember much.  I know there are no cars on the island and to get around you have to ride on a horse or in a carriage.  There are no computers, no cell phone usage and no televisions.  I can’t wait to go but it is definitely going to be interesting.  I’m not sure how I’m going to survive without my computer.

Bed Bugs

Posted by Gina on Jul 6, 2008

I can’t name very many things as disgusting as bed bugs.  Just the thought alone makes me not want to go to bed.  I recently started working at a hotel and have been hearing more and more about bed bugs.  About 2 weeks ago one guest was complaining that her bed had bugs in it.  I’m not even sure if it’s possible to see bed bugs bombs.  What ended up happening though was that we had to change her room and close off the old room until we were able to get it cleaned out.  Just a word of caution to those of you who travel a lot or need to stay in hotel rooms often.

Traveling

If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you want to go?  I have thought about this before and would love to visit a country in South America.  I don’t know why but I am fascinated with the hispanic culture and South America in general.  Everyone I have ever met from Peru, Bolivia, Guatemala, etc. have been the most warm, kind, and compassionate people.  One of my closest friends is actually from Guatemala.  We get along so well I often times forget that she was raised in a different country.  Our backgrounds are very similar although very different too.

I love living in Washington DC for many reasons.  When I look around me though, I realize I am living in an area that is filled with people from every area of the world.  Even if I don’t ever make it to South America I know that by living where I do I have already gotten a taste of it.

Visiting Mexico

I work at a beautiful 5 star resort. So when my husband and I go on vacation we like to stay at beautiful hotels. We have traveled a lot throughout the United States but are planning on heading out of the country for our next get vacation. My passport arrived about 2 months ago and we have finally decided on our next destination. We have decided to visit Mexico’s Isla Mujeres luxury hotel.

Finding the perfect spot to visit was not hard. Our choice was to go to Isla Mujeres, an island in the Mexican Caribbean. The most exciting part was finding the most gorgeous hotel to stay at on this island. It is called the Ixchel Beach Hotel. I found it on line at www.ixchelbeachhotel.com.  It took my breath away. I can hardly wait to get there. The website is filled with beautiful pictures and a detailed description of everything the hotel offers. I have a feeling this is going to be the best vacation we have taken so far.

Traveling

I recently traveled back home to visit family and friends in my childhood hometown.  The trip was wonderful, but one experience that stands out more than some of the others was visiting my Grandmother.  She is in her mid-90’s and is experiencing a completely different life than what she has ever known.  Recently she was put into a retirement community in order to receive 24 hour, round-the-clock care.

Her fragile body and depressed state was heartbreaking.  Her love of life has completely vanished.  In my attempts to comfort her I painted her nails, held her hand, and brought up old memories that I knew would make her laugh.  As we were leaving I couldn’t help but think of things I could do to help others in her same situation.  As my parents and I drove back home visions of caring for the ederly filled my mind.  My new mission in life has to involve helping the ederly and those that are alone.  I wish it didn’t take seeing my grandma so sad to figure that out.

What does the future hold?

Growing up Christian and going to church has given me a sense of faith, peace, and hope.  But one thing that has always caused a great deal of fear and doubt in me is the uncertainty of the future.

Lately I have been hearing stories from friends and coworkers about how their lives have changed overnight.  For example, the other day one of the ladies I work with had a car accident on her way to work.  Thank goodness she’s okay, but by the sound of the accident she got really  lucky.  It started off with her changing a flat tire she had gotten on her way to work.  Once that was done she was able to head in.  Unfortunately she was probably in a little bit of a rush and got hit by a car on the passenger side.  The the car behind her hit her in back and pushed her into the gaurd rail.  Thank goodness she’s okay, but doesn’t it make you wonder maybe she should have stayed home that day?
